EL in Quarantine: Making Masks

Elizabeth Pavlica’s homemade face masks

Elizabeth Pavlica’s homemade face masks

In April, I pulled out my secondhand sewing machine, relearned how to thread a bobbin and started making face masks.

Currently, I’m a fan of two different mask types:

  1. a basic pleated style from the Missouri Star Quilt Co.

  2. and this fitted mask by Cricut

After more than 50 masks, I have two hard-won tips for anyone getting started sewing face masks:

  1. Use tightly woven 100% cotton fabric. And, I like fabric with big patterns, bright colors and fun designs – the masks are more fun to wear!

  2. If your stitches are loose or bunchy, make sure you have your machine threaded correctly!

Shameless plug: if you’re not into sewing, shoot me an email – I’m selling masks for $5/pop.
